I sympathise - I realised your problem was not a 'slow' one, but with a RAM message - mine has been with both factors: speed and RAM. I often seem to encounter 'cannot complete your request due to not enough RAM' when running the admittedly more processor-intense filters (my assumption that these are more processor intense comes from the time they take). But,t he problem seems to be memory related in many guises. Example - it will print about 3/4 of a 30Mb file to an Epsom 1290, but only that much. It's not the printer - it's CS, because the printer correctly shows the 3/4 it is expected to print as a preview as being the only data it is being sent. But, PS7 will print that same file to the same printer using the same driver, perfectly (and much bigger files).
Out of interest, I have a SCSI hard drive totally dedicated to PS, plus the ability to use three more partitions on other physical drives. I can open a 50Mb file and start work, and within three or five changes (ie. Do any 3 to 5 things), where PS7 was fine and working wholly within RAM, with CS the hard drive is cranking around and efficiency is 0-10%. There is no logic to this I can see, with a 2Gb RAM system (of which 1,500Mb is free) and observably no problem with the same file and actions in PS7. Adobe's had me destroying preferences, unloading plug-ins (including theirs), uninstall/reinstall in safe mode, and much more, but nothing has changed. PS7 continues happily, but CS ... Thanks Shangara for your comments - again out of interest, the problems are present with the most basic of tiff files, no layers, nothing special - as well as large complex layered files (assuming they will open, though making the cache level as 2 has allowed opening, in general).
