I had an OS9 mac & an OSX machine, and appletalk worked fine between them.
Have a look in the network pane of the system preferences under appletalk ("show: Built in Ethernet" click on Appletalk, switch it on etc), and also look at the sharing pane. It certainly worked here - I would have gone mad if I'd had to copy everything.
I'm sorry I've just upgraded the OS9 to OSX so I can't check for you!
