Hi All,
Below from <http://www.macintouch.com/> which I think list reads may like to
read.

Lloyd Sigler writes about a serious problem with CD-R data integrity,
confirming other reports of the same issue:

We've been experiencing problems with data archived to CD-R. In short, the
data is becoming unreadable on some disks after a few years, sometimes much
less. While CD-R data loss has been reported previously, I don't believe
anyone has mentioned a connection with disks that have been labeled with one
of the commercial, do-it-yourself labels from Fellows, Avery, etc. We are
seeing this happen only to disks that have one of these labels attached as
far as we can tell at this time. We always use quality CD-Rs from TDK, Sony,
Imation and we always verify CD-Rs after burning to insure data integrity
when they are created. Could it be that the adhesive on these labels is
deteriorating the protective covering of the CD-Rs?
[Indeed, that appears to be exactly the problem, which others have also
reported. Note that data is actually stored at the top of a CD, not at the
bottom or in the middle, so slight damage to the top surface can easily
damage data. In addition to avoiding all sticky labels, we recommend using
only CD-certified markers on archival CDs and writing only at the inside and
outside edges, avoiding data areas. -MacInTouch.]
