Mike: What brand and how old is your scanner? This sounds a lot like "blooming" brought on through a thin layer of dust on the front silvered mirror. I had this happen a while back (scanner was out of warranty). I used something like the "sensor swabs" to clean the front silvered mirror, and have kept the unit bagged when not using it to keep dust to a minimum. There are some tutorial I've seen on the net for the LS-2000 and such that I could dig up if that's the unit you have.
