Mike:

A member of another listserve was having problems with some "hazy" images from her scanner.

I suspected that the scanner might have had some dust accumulate on the optics and suggested that the scanner might need cleaning. I'd had a similar effect occur after some work had been done in my office that stirred up and created a lot of dust. Here a couple of good links that I thought others here might find of use.

The first (http://www.vad1.com/photo/dirty-scanner/) outlines what the effect of dirty optics (lens and mirror) can have on your images, and shows ways to spot the early warning signs.

The other link is actually on that page, but for convenience, I'll list it
here, as it explains how to clean a Nikon LS-2000 scanner (http://home.cogeco.ca/~camera911/ls2000.html). Please use this information with care. I've not tested this for the LS2000, but have pulled apart a Polaroid 4000/Microtek Artixscan 4000, so you are on your own if you have problems. I would highly suggest that you not try this if you are at all "non-mechanically inclined."

One suggestion to prevent this kind of problem from happening in the first place is to keep the scanner covered when not in use. I've been using a heavy duty plastic bag, but found out about a company that makes custom dust covers from another list.

The company is the W. G. Supply Group 800-523-8254 (http://www.wgsupply.com/).

There is information on ordering custom covers (http://www.wgsupply.com/Computer_Supplies/Dust_Covers/ordering_computer_dust_covers.shtml), as well as a pricing chart that will help you estimate the cost. These are very affordable, one to cover the sprintscan 4000 would run under $10 plus shipping.

Hope that helps.
