I use a D1X a lot and use the raw file converter in PS CS, as you say it is faster also the interpolation software seems very good too. I don't think you will loose anything in the quality by not using Nikon editor. It is also possible to match the colours of both programs by tweaking in PS CS raw converter and then saving the settings (this helps if you want to batch convert a bunch of files).
