My work involves using quite a lot of art paper of various sorts. Before inkjet printing became so popular I used to buy large sheets of something like Arches and cut them up for use with my inkjet printer. Shortly afterwards, coated papers came into the shops. These papers are vastly more expensive. They are coated with a thin layer of some sort of binder, stopping the ink from spreading and holding it to the paper.
However, these papers now cost the same as light sensitive silver coated photographic paper. Frankly, I can’t understand why that should be. Someone could surely make a fortune selling a spray- on coating for use with all types of paper. It would certainly save everyone shed loads of money
