The first thing I would suggest is that you bite the bullet and upgrade the OS to Panther. OSX is evolving at a rate of knots and it pays to keep up. Some of the improvements are just eyecandy nonsense but there is a lot of good stuff as well.
After that find Onyx on versiontracker.com. 'Tick all the boxes in "Automatic" and go for a coffee'.
After that buy 'Diskwarrior' from alsoft.com.
