I think it helps to use an old reader - the rock solid one I've got is on a
12 year old Mac - it's very slow!

On just this subject, a photographer friend is currently in New Zealand and
has been airmailing me back packs of CDs (make two copies of each CD
produced and mail one set back to someone in the UK)

I check the batches of CDs when they arrive, and one had 10 unreadable files
- nothing would read them, and when I looked you could see a manufacturing
blemish (even good brands are worth a visual inspection) I suspect my friend
has not been quite as careful with the verification as I might have been :-)
