I have been asked to give information on how we setup Macs to print A3
centred with an Epson 1160 and Panther as a follow up to the 'In and Out
Colour Seminar' held last week. I gather that some people are unable to
achieve this. I thought the information below might be of interest to
Prodig readers as well.

City of Westminster College has 45 Apple Macs ranging from old style i-macs
to dual processor G4s (no G5s) and we run mostly Photoshop 7 plus a couple
of Photoshop CS. We currently have only got Panther installed on e-macs but
I dont believe inability printing central on A3 is connected with whatever
Apple Mac you use. Before installing Panther it would be essential to bring
computer firmware up to date. I personally believe, but I dont know for
certain, that its the print driver being used by the system to be the
likely problem. Dont use the print drivers that come with the operating
system. If updating from Jaguar, remains of old printer drivers etc could
remain and I recommend reformatting hard disk and starting afresh. Anyway,
the following is my installation workflow, which, up to now, has worked for
both network and direct USB connections:

Installation of Panther and 1160 Drivers:
* Fresh installation of 10.3 onto reformatted hard disk
* Disk utility run from CD used to check hard disk
* Permissions run using disk utility after rebooting from utilities folder
* All system and security updates installed and permissions run again from
utilities folder
* Disk Warrior (version 3.0.1) run from CD
* Epson 1160 installer run from Epson CD. This installs in classic mode and
installs classic drivers and generic profiles to system 9 folder. Reboot
classic and move generic profiles from system 9 ColorSync folder to global
Library ColorSync Profiles folder for use in OS10. (although we do have
custom made profiles for our printers we supplement them with generic ones
for other papers)
* Download latest Epson 1160 driver for use with OS10 from Epsons UK web
site. Epson released a new version about 6 months ago.
* Install driver and reboot Mac
* Run permissions, again, from disk utilities and Disk Warrior again from CD
* Work station left on overnight or run Xupport OSX cron scripts

Printing
Absolutely essential to always:
* For every image to be printed go to Page Setup first and then select both
1160 printer and paper size A3
* In 'Print with Preview' check that center image is chosen
* In Print settings check that the exact same printer is chosen if you use
more than one printer

Networking
The centering problem could stem from how the 1160 is networked in respect
of how and what controls the printer. Several people have asked for
information on how we network our printers. We have some 70 workstations
(Macs and PCs) using a variety of 9 printers. Our 1160s are connected to
old i-macs, running Jaguar 10.2.8. These macs are setup to share the
printer and are connected to an Ethernet network. Workstations running
either Panther or Jaguar are initially connected to printers using Print
Center by selecting the Add icon and selecting the 1160 printer from the
Sharing sub-menu (1160 and i-mac previously turned on). All control to
the printer is from the sender, i.e. the workstations. This is also
important for colour management. The i-mac here is used as nothing more
than an Ethernet card for the printer.
