Hi Simon,
I'm in digest mode, so you might have had an answer. I bought an Epson 4870
recently after fighting a Canon 9900F for weeks before getting a refund. I
was reluctant to get a flatbed on quality grounds, but I've found running
the Epson with Vuescan gives a pretty good result for the money. I bought it
to try scanning some very old negs from WW2 I was given and planned on
buying a Nikon 9000ED in the future if they looked OK, but they actually
print quite well on an inkjet. It's early days and I've not really tried it
with 35mm, but certainly for large format trannies / negs, it gives a good
result. I think the key is using Vuescan as it costs buttons and is as
simple or as advanced as you need it to be. For odd sized film stock you can
save crop settings and re-load them later. If you haven't seen it go to
www.hamrick.com No connection, just a satisfied punter.

Hope this helps,
Neill Watson
