I am looking afresh at printing onto CD's rather than continuing to use sticky labels and would like to hear the experiences of others who have tried this.

I do this routinely. It makes delivered CDs look far more professionally finished. I currently use an Epson 960. There are several low end Epson models with this capability now. As to durability, I would assume that printable CDs that have a fairly thick layer of some sort of white ink receptive coating on top of the usual surface are probably more durable as the sensitive top surface of the CD is well sealed and protected. I've done a few thousand of them over the past five years or so and no problems with durability yet. Its got to be better than relying on getting some sort of paper label stuck to a disk perfectly centered and flat (and hoping it stays that way over time) so as not to cause problems during playback.
