Professional Photoshop by Dan Margulis should be on everybody's
bookshelf even if you are not supplying CMYK files for print. There is
lots of good stuff for you to use and best of all to ponder on. He may
rub you up the wrong way at times, but there is too much good stuff
there to ignore.
