I just discovered what I believe to be a superior way to color balance
images in PS.  I have not seen it discussed in any if the many books I have.

>From Image>Mode convert to LAB mode so that you can adjust Luminosity and a
and b channels.  a and b channels are the color channels.  They are totally
orthogonal (there is no interaction).  Go to Image>Mode>Adjustment>Levels to
adjust these values.  As an aid, before hand, you can set the color sampler
on some points you believe to be white of gray and use these as a guide. (a
and should b zero for any shade of gray. Or just adjust the picture until
you're happy.)  You will note how narrow the a and b histograms are.  This
is because the LAB gamut is much wider than any RGB gamut.
