I have just made the first moves to digital capture by purchasing an SLRn. My experience in this area is not deep but I have been scanning color negative film for a couple of years. I have noticed the fringing being discussed can and has appeared in these scans usually along the boundary between very bright and not so bright objects (ie. windows and window frames, surrounding light fixtures - I shoot a lot of architecture). This suggests to me the problem is related to issues other than the chip in the camera.
