The consensus seems to be that ALL 1ds's do it. I gave up chasing canon
once I realised this, as mine was poor, but not the worst. Check the
archives for lots on this. Keep the exposures nice and bright to avoid
pulling up the shadows, I have never lost a shot because of it.

The banding is apparent in jpegs as well as RAW files, but is only
seen in dark shadow areas.
