Ellie, I would have thought so too!! However there really is a difference. I richers/smoother tonal range - especially on skin. It has been explained by a fellow photographer that when working in 16 bit the adjustments made are far more subtle when compared with 8 bit, even though the actuial data available is no different, resulting in a much better end image. David Riecks effectively suggests the same - I will try his experiment. If correct, it will be far better to work in 8 bit and then convert up to 16 bit and back again at the end. Either way, if it creates the same benefit, I shall be happy!! What I do believe, however, is that I have seen a quality hike in my images by doing this. Try it and see what you think. You should see the tonal improvement on the screen - no need to print it out.
