This is going to be a tough one. Thomas Holm / Pixl wrote:

I am not the sole benefactor of Profile-Lab.com. My role is one of a researcher and educator. Wherever possible, I promote and help introduce 3rd parties to issues of colour management and have often recommended both your own and Niel Barstow's services on this very list. However, Unfortunately I think a little context is needed here. I joined the Prodig list on the 31 August 2000. I also met you at the first DIG Colour Management Conference in late 2000... >>[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: >> >> The Digital Imaging Group COLOUR MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE has now become a >> reality! >> >> It will be an ALL DAY event taking place on Monday October 2nd 2000, at my >> studio in Central London, UK (details below). These were pioneering days, and I found myself instantly attracted to the science of colour management and the new found control that Photoshop 6 offered. In 2001 I was invited by Bob Marchant to join the DIG (as it was known then) committee and help with the Idea Awards and subsequently the Profile Scheme. On Wednesday the 14 of November 2001 I was present at a meeting of the DIG committee at Bob Marchant's studio in London. The purpose of that meeting was to establish a way forward for the Profile Scheme. Niel Barstow was also present. It was in fact me that raised issues about the mechanisms of the Profile Scheme and in particular the fact that you, through your (then) agent Niel Barstow, were to be the sole providers of profiles for the Scheme -to all its subscribers. These particular details are historic and we still don't have a 'standard' or a 'Kite Mark'. Since this fateful meeting both myself and Bob Marchant have been actively involved in the research and supply of Colour Management solutions, information and education. I have no involvement in Mr Marchant's Colour Management business whatsoever. Building profiles is a thankless job, I think you would be the first to admit that. As I have said many times, Colour Management is 70% education and 30% implementation - at the user level. Behind the scenes however, there is an unending need to research and explore solutions for every new printer, new paper or new ink that comes to market. For this I must thank everyone who has chosen to adopt a colour managed workflow. Without the individuals who have adopted colour management, there would be no feedback mechanism to find the problems and address the issues that arise from each user's unique configuration; be they profile or OS related. 90% of installations carried out by Profile-Lab are done on site. These are not big company installations but individuals seeking knowledge and confidence in their way of working - workflow, if you prefer. It is this clean bill of health that I have been active in delivering to many individuals working digitally. Sometimes it can be a quick discussion of Colour Management in Photoshop, sometimes the workings of the Epson print driver. A lot of this is done on the phone. This is never charged for. I respect your position as a pioneer of the Colour Management subject. Equally, I am sure you will agree that many soldiers are required to disseminate that message to those that it will help. That again is a role I have chosen to adopt. I am a scientist. Physics and Astronomy more specifically. I take pride over the hours of research that I have enjoyed in developing techniques for building profiles. However, as any good scientist, my research is empirical. It is exactly this that has established the respect that users of Profile-Lab profiles have come to enjoy. Few professional photographers are interested in the mechanics of supplying profiles. They want robust systems in which to guarantee the final delivery of their trade. That is what I go out and do. >Thomas Holm / Pixl wrote: > > Be purist then but live with the fact that your will never excel unless your > printer is operating under circumstances where stability can be achieved: > Not a desktop printer, these ARE not generally stable. > Controlled temperature never deviating more than 1-2 degrees centigrade > Stable humidity environment never deviating more than 4-6 degrees > RelHumidity. It is not up to me to define the tools that people choose to use in their trade. I merely try to make those tools operate in as robust and predictable a manner under the prevailing conditions. That is what 'real world' colour management is all about. >Thomas Holm / Pixl wrote: > > I'd be interested in knowing what that "Clever Mix" of how testcharts are > measured is please? > This list is for sharing information, not pure marketing... The clever mix is specific to each unique user's setup. Different papers or inks require an individual approach. Each individual user's goal needs to be considered. I have often been asked to create a profile for a photographers portfolio - specific to the subject matter and the predicted viewing conditions. This has little to do with colour management but offers a degree of control which was not available previously. If you look at my original post, I was merely presenting fact: Profile-Lab build profiles. Profile-Lab have nearly 2 years of established experience and research under their belt. Profile-Lab charge 74 +vat per profile based on profiling 2 paper surfaces. Profile-Lab worked with Silverprint to create an exhaustive inkjet paper sample book to help buyers choose their media. My involvement, I hope, is now clear. As Henry Miller once put it "The goal of life is not to possess power but to radiate it." Giving individuals the means to navigate through what is for all photographers - technologically "interesting times" is what I believe in. Aldous Huxley said "...to have Idiocy with Ideology, to have Wars because of Words, to have Tomorrow's Misdeeds out of Yesterday's Miscreeds?" I am glad that I have been given my opportunity of a reply.
