Sending this again as my first effort last night doesn't seem to have hit
the list:

Dear All,

We need to bear in mind some limitations of printing to CMY ink-sets here.

Generally, the gamut one can observe from transmitted light - the primaries
of which (to all intents and purposes) are Red, Green and Blue - is much
bigger than that generated by a CMY ink-set.

Saturated reds, greens and blues are generally very difficult to represent
on paper.

In short, no inkjet printer is going to be particularly good at printing
reds, whether it's Fotonic, Ultrachrome...whatever. That's physics.

If you are looking at reds alone (and without going to the trouble at this
stage of building a gamut map), I would say that Fotonic would produce a red
that appears richer than that of Ultrachrome, for example.

One of the reasons for this is that Fotonic is generally better at printing
darker colours, a characteristic one would expect from dye-based inks. It's
often this characteristic, rather than saturation, that can make colours
such as reds appear richer and stronger.

However, that's not to say that one ink is *better* than the other overall.

I always think it is unfair to compare an RGB file or a transparency with an
inkjet print - one needs to view the latter in isolation. You can make reds
from an inkjet look red (I have worked extensively with Ultrachrome and
Fotonic and had success with both) - sometimes you have to resort to the
power of illusion to make it really work.

Don't be fooled by glossy inkjet substrates appearing to give richer colours
- they are often doing just that, 'appearing to'. A decent matte paper like
Hahnemhle Photo Rag can print a greater range of colours than many glossy
stocks, sometimes it just doesn't 'appear to'. The latter, however, isn't
quite so good at handling the darker colours...I could go on!

I hope this helps.

Best wishes,

JL
