without getting into the argument about whether the Epson gray balancer is good or not.... Gray balance is a good thing, if you can do it, for any printing system. Yes, profiles will work to get good gray balance but they can use all the help they can get. Inkjet printers are notoriously un-graybalanced. Try printing a gray ramp (even RGB values from 0 to 255) to your printer with no color management and you will see what I mean. Some of the better profiling targets have extra samples in the neutrals and near-neutrals. This is so the profile has more information to get good even grays because you photographers love to stress-test profiles with gray images <g>. If your printer is not gray balanced then these "neutral" patches don't come out so neutral and some of their benefit is lost as it is off neutral and the software doesn't get all the patches it might need to understand your printer's habits.
