Frank, You could try using a  28mm PC shift lens on 35 mm in place of a 5x4.
Then  hang a coloured drape or background paper in front of the mirror at a
point where the reflected surface is covered, set up your tripod to the left
or right of your material and move the lens barrel  across until your object
and the reflection come into view. Light the frame as normal and light the
drape/background paper from below. Bevelled edges may cause a problem but
this can be overcome by hanging strips of material to fill the reflection.
This method would considerably drop your retouching needs.

This the way I have tackled mirrors,and chrome/brass bathroom fittings
before and it worked well for me. Make your workflow easier by having frames
ready to shoot by largest size first then move everything in accordingly.
