That is exactly what iView and other cataloguers do in split seconds. You
can adjust your preferences to have any image size  preview of your
choice,including 100% rendering of RAW files( by opening the asociated jpeg
file "adjusted" to your camera settings as shot).
 I don't see any smart strategy in having to open some 500  RAW files from a
shooting in order to figure out how to edit, or just limiting myself  to a
thumbnail preview to make my choices .To say the least,  It means more time
at the computer.

OK, but the closer you get to the limit the slower the app will behave.
Also, depending on how you organize your data in your machine, this
limitation may introduce storage/archival problems

 iView had a limit of around 8000 files and  the latest version 2.5 already
solved that, going beyond 100.000 files per catalog now.
As I said first, these operations should go better in an app outside PS
just to keep it at full performance. Integration within the apps already
exists, so they can work as bundled.
