Resolved this now thanks to Nick McGowan-Lowe;
On the lens mount of the D100 there is a small lever that is depressed when a Nikon lenses are attached. The lever is depressed by means of a small nob of plastic that sticks out from the lens. This does not appear on my Sigma lens - so Im going to glue one on!
