Of course it does rather depend on the subject you are pathing. If its all straight lines then nothing beats this technique for speed, accuracy and elegance.

I find this tool can be surprisingly quick, and the precision with which you can path shapes is superb. I do not see this as a matter of clicking on points, rather than a challenge to use the minimum number of points to execute the work. In the event of wanting a feathered selection that's no problem. It is simple to convert a path into a selection and use quick mask, giving you all the control you ever should need.
