[PRODIG] Archiving

Hi there,
I followed the posts in April 5-8th Re archiving. Thanks. Still reading! A question.
When saving a large volume of .tifs. Whether final files or bulk shots not used but may be selected in the future. Does anyone compress them in any way - jpeg/stuff/zip etc Can anyone point me to the best methods and what pros/cons (no loss of quality!) so I can research.
Have invested in Portfolio 7 (Extensis). About to archive and back-up Hard Drive. I realise the common consensus in terms of longevity are CD's over DVDS's. Any DVD info?
With the terabyte Lacie drive I'm thinking this may be the way to go!
