Bob, You could do it using iPhoto. If you have the latest version (4.0.3) you can choose from several transition effects. Simply put the images into one album, select "Slide Show", choose your effects/music, save the settings, then go file/export, choose your Quicktime settings, and export. You will then have a standalone Quicktime Movie of your slideshow. Should even be cross platform.
