Mac recently issued an update, but as you are already 10.3.5 it looks like you already have it.( For the benefit for those not yet upgraded). That cured most Mac problems ( not that there were many though).
Are you shooting to Camera Manager in Preview? This is very memory hungry and should only be used for first one then you should go straight to Photodesk contact sheet. The problem as I see it is with your G4 memory. I have had this before with others with 512mb ram. Get some more and upgrade it to 1gb and I am sure you will be fine.
