In the 1970s I was an assistant to the Managing Director of Kodak Limited and manager of the companys Public Relations Division. I subsequently left to manage my own specialist photo library Space Frontiers Limited  which was dedicated to spaceflight and astronomy. This library together with  the company was sold in 2000 but I continue to do much the same thing somewhat less formally under the banner of my organisation Sol Invictus.

I have written a number of books one of which was the definitive (and an award winning) biography of William Henry Fox Talbot.  Earlier I wrote the biography of Herbert Ponting who was Captain Scotts photographer during the Antarctic Expedition of 1910-13. My last book was Astro Photography: An Introduction to Film and Digital Imaging published at the end of 2002 by George Philip. I have appeared a number of times on Sir Patrick Moores Sky at Night programme to discuss aspects of astronomical imaging and I am a technical reviewer of (primarily) digital equipment and systems for the British Journal of Photography.
