Hi Matthew.
I have just got off the phone from a large prepress house because some tear sheets have rather more black ink on them than is ideal. (Like the paper is buckled where the dark image is.)
That's why we have to be wary of any 'Contract Proof' situation.
They originally stated that euroscale coated v2 would be fine. Apparently they have a company policy to respect the RGB profiles but strip off all CMYK profiles to keep the total ink limit to 300%. (AFAIK Euroscale is 350%).
Unfortunately , stripping the profile won't limit the ink. Quite the opposite. What's in the CMYK file ( your estimate of Euroscale V2 ink limit is correct) will be put down on the press.
Does anybody know how widespread this behaviour is?
Sadly extremely widespread..
And what on earth are we meant to do when the client specifies CMYK.
Get a CMYK specification, target or best of all agree on a CMYK colourspace defined by an ICC profile.
Sorry to sound like a repeating sound loop , but we are addressing this on several fronts with at least two new documents on best practice being printed soon. In the meantime , the very least you can do is send your client the DIG code of practice that covers these points in enough detail to outline the correct working procedure.
The ideal solution of course is that of a well informed dialogue with client/prepress/printer. This assumes of course that all parties are equally well informed :-).
I'll leave he diatribe about training for another day.
Regards,
Bob Marchant.
