Thanks to everyone who responded to my plight. What was revealed was that
the profile wasn't the only thing lacking in the scan.

At Richards Kenwards suggestion, I emailed him a couple of segments of the
scan and he confirmed that it wasn't a very good scan at all but conceded
that it was one of the better pre-press neg scans he'd seen, which are not
necessarily suited to a photographers needs.

Armed with my new found knowledge, I requested that they looked at the scan
on one of their monitors - it was a very old 15 inch monitor and appeared
fuzzy, and opened up in PS3! All I had left at this stage was to challenge
them on the state of the histogram [it looked like a silhouette of a forest
after a fire], but I was told that it was a good scan, they didn't want to
know and there was no further debate. End of story. They also told me that
8/16 bit was not applicable to drum scanning, unlike the desktop scanners
that I may be used to. It's a pity as they are local and there are not too
many labs/bureaus in SE London and I had handed them the job with total
confidence.

I've since had the scans redone by Richard Kenward and there is a remarkable
difference in the clarity. Thank you all for making me aware of standard I
should expect out of a drum scan, and to Richard for producing it.
