We've recently shot a national mail campaign for a household name.Initially
my client - a design group - was reluctant to shoot digitally as he's had
poor results in the past,he tells me.I shot tests, film & digital (I use an
Imacon back on an RZ).Fine.We shot digitally. The shoot went well.

I've just seen the printed result.It's shite,it really is.No
colour,especially no black.Flat.Horrible.

I've been earning my living as a photographer for over thirty years. In the
past, when a printer produced a rubbish job you could show them a
transparency, ask them why they couldn't reproduce anything like it and they
could bullshit and bluster to their heart's content. Now I can't do that.

I've been shooting digital almost exclusively for over a year now,and
supplying digital files from my negs and trans for about five years. So I'm
not a novice.

Let me also say,I'm a photographer.I take photographs.That's what I want to
do.I learnt how to use digital the same way I learnt how to use film.I don't
want to fiddle with files all day.I'll adjust levels and sharpen a bit where
necessary.

Personally,I think that the printer is being lazy and couldn't give a shit
about the end result, because this is my experience in the past.(And he was
probably screwed on price) He'll just blame the photographer,as they always
have done.

Now,I'm really interested in being able to approach an 'independant expert'
who can look at our files and the printed result and give a good analysis of
what's gone on.

Can anyone help us?

I phoned my client to see what was going on.Nothing to do with him,he
said, his client handled the print.Apparently they're happy with the
result. So there is no dispute over this job. It's just that I hate seeing my
hard work turned into garbage.

I do hope this doesn't come over as a rant.It's a genuine
appeal................

Regards

A
