I currently have an Athlon 2400 based machine, homebuilt. The latest
generation of Athlon 64 chips seem to have quite a lot more poke than
this. However, I switched to a Mac for my laptop and much prefer the
stability of Mac OSX to windoze.
I am interested in you comment regarding stability, but you don't say which
Windows OS you are currently using.
I am using XP Pro SP2. It is extremely stable, in my opinion. On the (very)
rare occasion that it has crashed, it is usually because I haven't run
chkdsk or defrag for a while. When I do, performance improves noticeably.
Also, I never download or install anything (either from download or CD)
without first switching off all non-Microsoft startups in the System
Configuration Utility. This gives the cleanest possible installation.
I can't speak for relative performance, but, looking over the shoulder of a
designer recently, I was surprised at the length of time her Mac took to
open one of my TIFFs. I use a P4 2.5Ghz.
