Unlike many photographers he got involved in his subjects. After a shooting trip to Poland, before the wall came down, he filled a large van with food and drug parcels and returned on a delivery trip round all the people who had helped him. I think he did this often.
He also knew just about everyone notable who used a Leica.
This makes me think that at some future time photographers will be differentiated by whether their career was entirely in film, digital or both.
