1. It will not allow me to rename them. It comes up with a box with dialogue that I simply cannot work out no matter how much I drink....

I'd written an article that's now on my Controlled Vocabulary site that unravels the mystery of the batch renaming with PS7. It should be sufficient to help you understand how this works even with PS CS.
