Maybe you could look at Plone FlashUpload (code) (http://plone.org/
products/ploneflashupload), it shows a progress bar when uploading
images.

Even if it is PHP code, the idea is pretty great for developpers:
define a list of call back with their params, call the batch api,
you get a loading progress bar and each call back are done throw
ajax call.
Their are many examples like making big csv file import easier (no
more proxy error or timeout) with better UI.
