This is indeed a very nice feature and I hope it lands to the trunk.

There is no DGF release schedule as far as I know. We could have a minor
release just for this feature.

Did you update unit tests to have some, simple, tests for the feature?

Yes I added unit tests and a sample field using functions in DataGridDemoType2.
