Since you are asking for hints.......
I am not really understanding this, but could this be an option:
Load all "pages" at the same time and put the in an ul
use jquery to navigate through them (like collective.easyslider)...
or have some kind of "counter (from 1 to 20) that shows the "right
panel" by inserting (jquery) some class / div
Loading "everything" but not showing it should work (?)
For the record: I used to have "buy buttons" on the slider here, and
that worked (I know its not an overlay, but still)

We can't get the third bullet point working. When the user clicks a
regular link in the overlay, it results in a normal page load. We
tried some crazy re-binding with prepOverlay() etc, but that got
nowhere. I couldn't find any jQuery Tools options that seemed to help
either.
Hints?
