We sited the house in a spot where none of the rare oaks had to be cut down. They used to grow in several places all over California, but now they are extinct everywhere but this plateau. So no, we did not kill innocent trees for the house. Even the garage is configured in an unusual way so that we did not have to cut down a tree that wound up in the middle of the driveway.
