You are aware that as much as the UN deserves criticism, all countries try to influence the organization for their own benefit (politics, right?). The US use its power of veto on anything that doesn't attend its own interests at the expense of the majority when it finds it necessary (fair or unfair matters).
That's the problem. The UN doesn't bend automatically to the commands of it's major monetary contributor, so it's easy to say the organization "doesn't work".
