There's a lot of radiant energy where we are, so it might not be the same
here where your friend is at all. The windows we have ordered have low-e
glass with a 1" dead space between the panes. The 50% bronze tint should do
very nicely.

We tinted the windows on our last house and on the office space we rented in
town. We already know that we like our windows tinted. I guess all that heat
coming in the glass has never been fun for us. I don't like curtains and
like to leave the blinds open when I can, so the tinting is very useful.

The heat gain issue is the reason we put one level of the house below grade,
too. It is rare for a home in California to have a basement. We designed our
house to be able to close off our lower level so we don't have to heat or
cool it unless we want to. I just hope it all works out the way I THINK it
will.
