We get them from both magistrates and judges, depending on the jurisdiction.

The salient point is the drug dealers need to be better with exterior
surveillance now.

But it's the police that approach the judge in the first place to get
the warrant.

Excuse my ignorance of US law, but do you guys have Magistrates?  i.e.
a 'minor' judge that has limited power, normally focussing on minor
crimes. Magistrates in the UK are very often voluntary (aka Justices
of the Peace).  It's Magistrates that normally grant search warrents
here.
