I must comment too much. <g> The '&' key is starting to stop responding. The rest of the laptop (Dell Inspiron 5100 -- 3 years old) appears to be fine. My thought is to get a can of air and blow out the keyboard as it sets. Other tips or suggestions?

We have recently purchased a few ACER laptops and one of those has developed a problem with 2 keys that don't work. Before we send it back, a short term solution is to use an on screen keyboard (or even an external USB keyboard). To use the on screen one (If you are using XP) type start / run and type OSK.EXE which works nicely. Quite handy if you come across a duff keyboard and need to get something done quick.
