One major problem that soccer has in the States is that it's 
competing with leagues that are the best in the world. Great 
baseball, basketball, and hockey players often come to America to 
play, while top soccer players are much more likely to end up in 
Europe. Even if MLS decided to try and compete with the European 
clubs, they wouldn't dominate the market the way that other American 
leagues do. So the American sports fan has a choice of watching top-
level basketball or not-so-good soccer; unless he has a strong 
preference for the game of soccer, he's probably going to stick to 
basketball.
