Let me use an analogy: I'm walking down the street, and see someone
with a wallet in their hands. I decide to steal the wallet. I walk up
to the person, steal their wallet and run away. However, the other
person runs after me, snatches back their wallet, and then they proceed
to give me a beating I won't forget for stealing their wallet. Does the
fact that I failed to steal the person's wallet, and even took a beating
for my attempt, take away the fact that my intention was to steal their
wallet?

The point is, you cannot infer the original intention by the result. A
failure to achieve something, does not infer you did not attempt to
succeed.

Why did we begin kicking the Brits out of our country in 1776, was it
because of oil?
