Let me use an analogy: I'm walking down the street, and see someone with a wallet in their hands. I decide to steal the wallet. I walk up to the person, steal their wallet and run away. However, the other person runs after me, snatches back their wallet, and then they proceed to give me a beating I won't forget for stealing their wallet. Does the fact that I failed to steal the person's wallet, and even took a beating for my attempt, take away the fact that my intention was to steal their wallet?
The point is, you cannot infer the original intention by the result. A failure to achieve something, does not infer you did not attempt to succeed.
