And here I am with my web sites hosted by professionals but generating my
own electricity and purifying my own water. Go figure...

I liked having my own T1 connection but didn't really want to be responsible
for other people's sites going down. I like the idea of having the box
itself hosted in a data center where someone else will press the button
while I'm a hundred miles away visiting grandkids or in a movie theater or
on vacation in the desert somewhere.

There is a limit to the amount of responsibility each of us should take on.
Purifying water? Generating power? A snap compared to guaranteeing uptime
for someone else's critical business processes. IMO, anyway. And that is
from someone that is doing it!
