Exactly right.

So. I've been on dial-up Internet since I started, pretty much, some 15+
years ago. I'm now considering going to high-speed access.

Nearly any of the commodity "high-speed routers" available from
Linksys, D-Link or Netgear will provide the basic functionality: NAT
(Network Address Translation) provides a basic software firewall
between you and the internet. Most of the routers block most of the
badness coming from the internet. Each Windows, Mac or Linux
workstation should also run a software firewall program, such as
ZoneAlarmPro. The WinXP firewall is crippled and more trouble than it
is worth.

The router should also provide switched service for (typically) four
ethernet connections. These should configure automatically and be
recognized by your machines once you've cabled the machines together
and turned everything on. If not, come back with follow-up questions
and we'll try to help!
