The money is going into the war machine, which is a dead-end industry. In the best of times their products aren't used, and in the worst of times they are used to destroy. Compare that to spending on productive industries of any nature, whose products are actually used to make peoples' lives better. I think I understand your point, that we pay soldiers who in turn feed their 7-11's and gas stations, etc., so the money stays in the economy, but the counter-point is there are no fruits of that soldier's labor. He didn't build a chair that someone is still using, and he didn't plant trees or feed people. If his job was infantry, he'll have to unlearn everything he was taught, and that's not a plus for society. You may wind up saying that it all boils down to "we're paying for security". The problem with that thinking is that science has placed Big Gun Security into the garbage pile of illusions. This truth hasn't come sharply into focus yet, and let's hope it doesn't, but we cannot ignore it. Security, to the extent that it can be achieved, is far more likely to come from noble aspirations and achievement then guns of any size. We're barking up the wrong tree.
