Alan, I have OKI 590's here and they run in Epson LQ Emulation mode. They do have top tear-off and it works under all modes. Maybe you should look at upgrading the printers.
Also I've always found it is worthwhile looking on the Epson site for the drivers as opposed to using the inbuild O/S ones. It won''t solve the tear-off problem though as that is purely hardware driven (at least on the 590 series).
