Ok, I've solved it.
After taking a break, and coming back and spotting this thread again, I
realized that my answer could be boiled down to "I think Alltrim() is
ignored by SQL". To test, I added a 25 char field, filled it with
various lengths of data (none > 12 chars), and ran 'Select
Alltrim(foobar) from Mycrap'. Sure enough, the field length is 25.
Armed with that, I googled "alltrim ignored by sql" and got tons o' hits
that verified this. Probably the most succinct was this one from
"What's new in VFP9", from....Hentzenwerke. Bad, naughty, senile Whil,
for not chiming right on in with the answer!
