I need to hang out with a different crowd. Ran a 5K a couple weeks ago.
I got beat by a gal pushing a baby jogger.

I just spent my Sunday morning racing (as in 25-30mph "I''d run over
my own mother for an extra place", not a charity ride) bicycles with
whippersnappers who were in some cases literally half my age or less.
Beat most of them. Little buggers seem to get faster each year,
though.

I dunno, I find myself slipping more and more into management roles,
and (*gasp*) actually finding myself liking it. Because someone needs
to corral that youthful enthusiasm into something that can be used and
maintained over a period of time. College Boy just isn't going to
know the gotchas that switching to Topaz-on-MagLev may present.
Little Miss Master's Degree hasn't yet learned how to "manage up", and
doesn't know the tricks of making the team look like stars with a few
key status reports and framework tweaks.

Oh, I think I can still crank out code with the best of the
youngsters. Just got done with a (if I do say so myself) really cool
hw/sw test solution that probably is patentable, and solved a problem
no one else in the industry seems to have figured out. But much to my
horror, I find herding the cats into a workable team to crank out cool
stuff to be pretty rewarding, too. Having seen some of the nightmares
created by 25 year old "managers" that got there by attrition or by
being good engineers, I think some years of experience in the field
can be leveraged to gel good, enthusiastic youngsters into good teams.

Too old for this? Hell, I think I'm just getting good at it.
